What to do in Shanghai

Shopping in Shanghai

If you cannot find the Chinese products you want in Shanghai, then it probably does not exist! Shopping is almost like a religion in this fast-moving city with major shopping streets now vying for space amongst all the side streets that have taken selling goods to their heart.

The traditional streets are Nanjing Road and Huaihai Road, but markets are the place for authentic Chinese wares – just be prepared to haggle. A good tip is to start at 25 percent of the asking price and work your way up from there if you have to.

The Yu Yuan Bazaar is in the Old Town and is chock full of souvenirs. There are pearls on sale alongside art, calligraphy, woodcuts and cloth, as well as many other collectables to delight you. Make sure you barter hard here as many things are over-priced.

While a great bargain will aid you on your homeward flight Shanghai and its shops will still be going long after you have gone. Even though most clothes in the world are now made in China, that does not mean it is any cheaper to buy the real thing here. There are also a lot of counterfeit goods on sale so be on your guard and do not buy anything that looks dodgy.

Shanghai Museum

This Museum is in contrast with the futuristic city of Shanghai. If you would like to see some history then you should probably head over to one of the best museums in the country. The Shanghai museum houses masterpieces of Chinese art. The Shanghai Museum is also home to more than 6000 years of traditional artwork ranging from bronze works to sculptures, paintings and more.

Jade Buddha Temple

The Jade Buddha Temple is one of Shanghai's still active Buddhist monasteries. In February the temple is very busy, because of the Lunar New Year, but well worth the crowds.
